Autumn, where the leaves change, the air becomes crisp, and the desire for warm and comforting drinks increases.
As an avid cocktail sipper, I’m a little bit excited to share with you my favourite autumn cocktails that will warm you up. In my opinion Autumn is the perfect season to experiment with new ingredients and flavours. And let’s face it there are endless possibilities when it comes to crafting the perfect seasonal cocktail.
So, here goes …
First up is the classic Old Fashioned
Timeless with it’s big bold and warming flavours. The Old Fashioned is made by muddling sugar, bitters, and a slice of orange in a glass, then adding ice, whiskey, and garnishing with a cherry. For an autumn twist, I like to use a high-proof bourbon or rye to add a subtle smokiness that pairs well with the changing season. Simple and elegant, yet perfect for sipping on a cool autumn evening.
To make it: Simply mix together bourbon or rye whiskey, a sugar cube (or simple syrup) and a few dashes of bitters. Add a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry for garnish, and you’ve crafted yourself the perfect Old Fashioned.
Apple Cider Margarita
I love a good Marg and this one has me feeling all giddy. The perfect balance of sweet and sour, with the addition of apple cider adding that seasonal twist.
To make it: Combine apple cider, lime juice, tequila, and triple sec in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a glass with a salt rim. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or apple slice for added flavour and fancy.
Cranberry Ginger Fizz
When you want to touch on those seasonal flavours be sure to remember this one. What I loved most about it – not too sweet, not too bitter or sour – perfectly balanced and just right. Bonus points because it’s ridiculously simple to create.
To make it: In a cocktail shaker, combine gin, lime juice, cranberry juice, and ginger syrup. Shake until well combined. Pour the cocktail over ice and top with club soda. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Hot Buttered Rum
This. This one is incredible and you need this one in your life stat. This is the OG of warming cocktails. Had a big day out in the cool weather – then reach for one of these. It will instantly warm you up.
To make it: : In a mug, combine rum, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Pour in boiling water and stir until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
Autumn really is the perfect time to indulge in those comforting and warming cocktails.
So invite your friends round, light a fire, and enjoy these delicious cocktails.
Happy sipping,
