Truth be told I’ve jumped onboard the Negroni train recently, something I vowed never to do.
In case you’ve been hiding under a rock the Negroni is a classic Italian cocktail that has been popular since its creation back in the early 20th century. The drink is a combination of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, and it has become a staple in bars and homes around the world.
One of the most important ingredients in the Negroni is: (surprise, surprise) the gin!
The gin in this instance provides the drink its distinct botanical flavour. Today I thought I’d share with you some of the best gins for the Negroni and how they can enhance this classic cocktail.
When selecting a gin for a Negroni, it’s important to consider the other ingredients in the cocktail in order to find a gin that will complement them. So step 1 is to consider the flavour profile.
Gin is a spirit flavoured with botanicals (juniper, coriander, citrus, herbs and spices etc). Each gin has a unique blend of botanicals, which results in a distinct flavour profile. Some gins are more citrus-forward, while others have a stronger juniper flavour.
BEST GIN FOR NEGRONIS
Tanqueray No. 10
Tanqueray No. 10 is a London dry gin that is recognised for its bold and complex flavour profile. It has a strong juniper flavour with hints of citrus and spice, which deems it an excellent choice for a Negroni. Tanqueray’s bold flavour profile can stand up to the other ingredients in the cocktail, plus it provides a strong base for the drink.
Malfy Gin Con Limone
But if you’re looking for a gin that is specifically designed for Negronis, then look no further than Malfy Gin Con Limone. This Italian gin is citrus-heavy, featuring lemon as the star. This makes it an awesome choice for your Negroni. The gin’s citrus flavour pairs perfectly with the other ingredients in the cocktail, and it can add a bright and refreshing note to the drink.
Bondi Liquor Co. Citrus Gin
This one from Bondi Liquor Co. is a real contemporary style gin. It’s bursting with an array of citrus – but it’s the touch of fresh mandarin & lemon myrtle that really makes this one shine. It’s light, citrusy and perfect that big bad Negroni you’re whipping up.
Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin
This is one for those who are into their Australiana style flavours and native botanicals. Aussie oranges, lemon myrtle, lavender, pepper berries from Tassie alongside some star anise and cinnamon. It’s a real dry style of gin that lays the foundation for an interesting and perplexing Negroni!
In my humble opinion, selecting the right gin for a Negroni is the make or break!
And for me it was Malfy Gin Con Limone that made the right choice for an impressionable Negroni, really elevating this classic cocktail to the next level.
Happy sipping,
